August 24, 2009 : Buffalo, NY - 2 LODD - In Loving Memory of Buffalo Fire Lieutenant Charles "Chip" McCarthy and Buffalo Firefighter Jonathan Croom who were killed in the Line of Duty.

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The first floor of a burning convenience store collapsed into the basement early Monday morning, killing two firefighters.

Flag-draped gurneys carrying the bodies were brought out of the two-story building shortly before 10 a.m. as fellow firefighters, some saluting, lined up and took off their helmets. Weeping and distraught people believed to be relatives had been escorted from the scene moments earlier.

Authorities could not immediately confirm reports that a third person - possibly a civilian the firefighters tried to rescue - was missing in the basement, a police spokesman said.

The fire at the Super Speedy deli was reported just before 4 a.m. The deli is on the ground floor of a corner brick building in a working-class neighborhood on the city's east side. Firefighters were still pouring water on the gutted building hours after the blaze began.

There was no immediate information on a possible cause of the fire.

The last Buffalo firefighter killed in the line of duty was 31-year-old Michael Seguin, who died July 4, 1997, when a roof collapsed during a house fire.

The last time more than one Buffalo firefighter died in the line of duty was on Dec. 27, 1983, when five firefighters were killed in a propane tank explosion at a warehouse - the worst loss of life in the department's 129-year history.

A Brother Officer is Gone

JERSEY CITY – Police Chief Thomas Comey released the following statement regarding the death of Detective Marc A. DiNardo, who succumbed to mortal injuries suffered last week while protecting the good citizens of Jersey City.

“It is with profound sadness that the Jersey City Police Department must announce the passing of Detective Marc A. DiNardo.

Det. DiNardo, a 10-year veteran, exemplified the bravery, professionalism and excellence that any police officer aspires to. As always our thoughts and prayers will be with the family of our fallen hero, as well as all others who serve.

After 28 and a-half years in law enforcement, I’ve learned that all in law enforcement give something, but we never know which one of us will have to give our all. Marc made that sacrifice to protect the citizens of Jersey City. He will continue to give, even in death, as his wife, Mary, and family have chosen to donate his organs so others may benefit.

Arriving On The Scene, He Knows Just What To Say, Follow Me Fallen Brother, I'll Show You The Way. Your Duty Has Ended, Your Work Is Now Through. Come Hand Your Hat Beside Mine. I'm A Cop, Too** RIP Detective DiNardo

February 28, 2009 : February 28, 2009 - In Loving Memory of Reverend John Thomas Piccione. "I never met Father John but I feel like I've known him all my life."

Father John Piccione, Reverend O.F.M. was Pastor by day at Saint Bonaventure’s Church in Paterson, New Jersey. He also was a dedicated Chaplin with two local Fire Departments. He was a very well known and respected priest who wore both a Franciscan robe and fire turnouts. Father John Piccione was always first due with not only one, but two New Jersey Fire Departments within the range of his parish. When a working fire took place he would pull on another robe of Reflective Strips and Nomex, and arrive at the scene and take his place as Fire Chaplin any time of the day or night.

Sadly, he passed away on the morning of Sunday February 22, 2009 at the young age of 44 after a long battling health issues. He will always be remembered for his dedicated service and true friendship of the firefighters he served so dearly, both paid and volunteer, we have truly lost one of the best.

He faithfully served both the City of Paterson Fire Department and West Paterson Volunteer Fire Department. At countless alarms he would arrive on the scene not to far behind the first due apparatus, you could see his concern as he watched the firefighters go to work; he would exchange warm greetings and silent prayers with the men and women as they went about their task at hand. Father John’s presence at any scene provided compassion to both the residents, firefighters and victims of the fire. Weather and time were never a factor when a fire came in; he would pull on his fire gear and white helmet and always a ray of hope as he took his place near the command post. With a nod or a wave, he would carefully watch over those who were fighting the fire. Many firefighters, during a momentary break, would always stop by to greet him in return. We were always thankful for the job he performed for us. It was a great comfort to know he was watching over us.

Father John was Parochial Vicar of Saint Bonaventure Church in Paterson from 1999 to 2005; he then took the Director role for the Office of Development of Holy Name Province, Director of Saint Anthony’s Guild and Guardian of Sacred Heart Friary in East Rutherford, New Jersey. He was a proud and devoted Chaplin to the West Paterson and Paterson Fire Departments. He also served the NJFMBA, Honor Legion Police Departments of New Jersey, and the Passaic County Prosecutors Office.

When Father John entered the ministry in Paterson, New Jersey he became close friends with the late Father Mychal Judge, OFM, and a Friar who served as New York City Fire Department Chaplin. Friar Mychal said to him “If you ever had the opportunity to minister to firefighters, he should take on the responsibility.” John took Mychal’s advice and was soon appointed Chaplin of the Paterson Fire Department; shortly thereafter the Volunteer firefighters in nearby West Paterson requested him as their Chaplin. Soon Father John was not only showing up at the scenes of fires in both towns, he could also be seen performing God’s work for the members of both departments, such things as weddings, christenings and even funerals were some of the things he became involved with, and took care of with his own personal, open, caring touch. I felt this first hand when he performed a wonderful ceremony for my Father when he passed away in 2005.

But it was September of 2001 when Father John was called upon to preside over the funeral of his friend, FDNY Chaplin Mychal Judge, who was lost at the scene that tragic morning in New York. This is a prayer written by Mychal that he carried with him the day he lost his life at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001 watching over his me, affectionately known to firemen as Mychal’s Prayer:

	Lord, take me where you want me to go;
	Let me meet who you want me to meet;
Tell me what you want me to say
And keep me out of your way.

You never got in our way Father John, you always led us, and for that we will always remember you. May you rest in Peace and continue to watch over us.

December 19, 2008 : December 19, 2008 - Former Bayonne Fire Chief John T. Brennan - Chief Gregory Rogers of the Bayonne Fire Department announced that former Fire Chief John T. Brennan died Friday at his home in Bayonne. He was 86. Rogers said, "Chief Brennan was an outstanding leader of the Bayonne Fire Department, which he led for more than 27 years. Under his leadership, the department modernized its equipment and facilities, and added an emphasis on fire prevention to firefighter training. Chief Brennan also oversaw the transfer of fire headquarters from the old police and fire building at 26th Street and Avenue C to the Municipal Building, which was constructed in 1971-72. He had a deep, positive, and lasting effect on our community. I had the distinct privilege of serving under him during my early years as a firefighter. On behalf of the Bayonne Fire Department, I would like to
extend condolences to the Brennan family."

Mayor Mark Smith said, "Chief Brennan was an outstanding public safety professional who served this community with distinction for nearly 45 years. He was a strong, courageous man who embodied the best traditions of the firefighting profession. His name will live on in the Bayonne Fire Department and in the Chief John T. Brennan Fire Museum. I would like to offer the community's condolences to his family."

John T. Brennan was born in Bayonne in 1922. His parents were Irish immigrants from County Mayo. The future chief was educated at St. Vincent DePaul Grammar School and Bayonne Technical High School. He joined the Bayonne Fire Department in 1943, and became one of the youngest fire captains ever in 1949. Brennan became acting deputy chief in 1952 and deputy chief in 1953. He was appointed chief in October 1960 after achieving the highest score on the civil service test. At age 38, Brennan was the youngest chief in the department's history.

Two months after becoming Fire Chief, Brennan responded to the scene of explosions at a propane storage plant and refilling station at Sun Gas Products Corporation. An 18,000-gallon propane tank was feeding the fire. The tank had to be shut off, but the tank was inside a ring of flames. Chief Brennan challenged the flames. While he ran through it, his fellow firefighters watered him down with high-powered hoses. He crawled under the tank and shut off the valve. Within ten minutes, the fire was under control, and a large, destructive explosion was prevented. For his bravery, Chief Brennan was praised in the Congressional Record. He also received a letter of citation for bravery from President Dwight D. Eisenhower. During his leadership of the department, Chief Brennan made training a continuing aspect of firefighters' careers. Previously, training was limited to new recruits. Chief Brennan also instituted fire education programs at Bayonne Hospital and at various local industries. Throughout his career, Chief Brennan took numerous firefighting, labor, and civil service courses around the United States.

John T. Brennan continued to serve as Fire Chief until his retirement in 1988.

Chief Brennan was a lifelong member of St. Vincent's Parish. He was a member of the International Association of Fire Chiefs, the New Jersey State Fire Prevention Association, the New Jersey State Paid Fire Chiefs Association, the Hudson County Fire Chiefs, the New Jersey State Exempt Firemen, the New Jersey State Fireman's Relief Association, the Bayonne Fireman's Mutual Benevolent Association, and the 3rd and 4th Degree of the Knights of Columbus.

October 22, 2008 : October 22, 2008 - George E. Batterson, a former New Milford councilman and mayor best known for building affordable housing for veterans returning from World War II, died Wednesday in a nursing facility.

Mr. Batterson, 102, grew up in Maywood and graduated from Hackensack High School, said his daughter, Merle B. Wade of Bergenfield. Mr. Batterson lived in New Milford for more than 80 years, and served as a Republican councilman there from 1941 to 1947 and as mayor from 1947 to 1950.

During his tenure in government, Mr. Batterson pushed for the construction of a large complex of garden apartments along River Road known then as Batterson's Barracks, but now called the Brookchester Apartments. The federal government contributed money to the project, according to records from the New Milford Borough Hall.

"A lot of people didn't like Batterson's Barracks, but the boys were coming back from war, and I wanted to make sure they could afford to go there," Mr. Batterson told The Record in 2006, when he turned 100 and the borough honored him with a proclamation.

Wadesaid her father worked as a paper salesman for various companies in New York City until he retired at age 65. He was devoted to his family and a staunch cheerleader for the GOP, she said.

"He was a very avid Republican, and I always felt he was very black and white about everything in life," she said. "I always tried to say to him, 'Dad, life is really sort of gray.' "

Wade remembers a time when a contractor who had built the Brookchester Apartments sent a gift basket to the family's second home in Lake Hopatcong, which was built by her grandfather. Her father turned it down.

Mayor Frank DeBari, a Democrat, said Mr. Batterson and his late wife, Beatrice, were well-known throughout town. DeBari said Mr. Batterson contacted him after he was elected mayor. DeBari visited Mr. Batterson several times after he went into the nursing home about five years ago.

"He reached out to me when I became mayor and said, 'If there's anything you ever want to know, come see me,' " DeBari said. "He was a good guy. He was a good mayor."

Wade said her father remained active by bicycling, walking and swimming up until about the time he turned 95. Even in the nursing home, she said, he would urge fellow residents to get up out of bed and move around.

A 1998 article in The Record said Mr. Batterson, then 91, visited the elderly and the sick as part of his volunteer work with the Retired Men's Club at First Congregational Church in River Edge.

Mr. Batterson is survived by his three children and many more grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Emittsburg, Maryland : October 06, 2007 - National Fire Academy "To Lift A Nation" Monument. **ALL PHOTOS IN THIS GALLERY WERE TAKEN BY CAPTAIN RON PETRILLO FROM THE CITY OF PALM COAST, FLORIDA FIRE RESCUE** Thank you Brother!

On the afternoon of September 11, 2001, Bergen Record photographer Thomas E. Franklin captured an unforgettable image of hope - three firefighters raising the American flag. Standing defiantly against the gray and white landscape of devastation, these three dust-covered men and the vivid red, white and blue of Old Glory instantly became a symbol of hope and American patriotism. To Lift A Nation, created by sculptor Stan Watts, is the focal point of the 9/11 National Memorial on the grounds of the National Emergency Training Center in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Three bronze firefighters, standing three times life-size, raise the American flag in honor of all of the firefighters lost on 9/11 and as a symbol of hope to those left behind.

The statute is owned by the National Firefighters Foundation, and is now on loan to the USFA, FEMA and DHS. There has been no federal money used to support or construct this monument. It is the result of an exciting relationship between the artist, the foundation and several corporate sponsors, and that we have the opportunity presented to the USFA by the Foundation Board of Directors by allowing it to be displayed here at the NETC. There is a national unveiling scheduled for November 05, 2007, and more details will be coming from the foundation. We are honored the USFA has this opportunity to display this monument.

TO LIFT A NATION MONUMENT
AT - A - GLANCE
The "To Lift a Nation" monument is a three-times life-size bronze sculpture of the world famous photo taken of three firefighters raising the American flag at ground zero, September 11, 2001
The purpose of the "To Lift a Nation" monument is to honor the American flag as a symbol of freedom and strength of the unconquerable American spirit. It will also stand as a memorial for those whose lives were taken by acts of terror on September 11, 2001.
The sculptor is 40 feet high, 6 feet deep and 8 feet wide. Each of the three firefighters statues weigh approximately 5,000 pounds and was formed from approximately 160 bronze sections weighing between 60-80 pounds each. After welding the statues and flag pole to its base, the monument will weigh than 17,000 pounds.

Well know sculptor, Stan Watts, owner of Atlas Bronze Casting in Kearns, Utah, created the monument. Construction began on May 2007 with the sculpting of the clay firefighter statues.
The entire cost of the colossal sculpture including a maintenance fund was underwritten by an anonymous donor and several benefactors donated raw materials for its creation.
The monument will be formally dedicated Monday, November 05, 2007 with the ceremony at the monument here in Emmitsburg, MD.
